Bird Feeder Advice

There are a number of ways to feed wild birds, details of some of these are given below.

With the mixed seed feeders, especially the longer ones with six to eight feeding points, you can put a mix of feed types in one feeder. For example you could fill them with a third of sunflower hearts, a third of black sunflowers and a third of some mixed seed for example Harrison's Deluxe Wild Bird Mix. This is particularly useful if you are short of space, but want to offer a variety of food to the birds.

Ground Feeding

Ground Feeding

Ground feeding of birds is the simplest way of feeding garden birds especially those that prefer to feed on the ground: Robins, Wrens, Blackbirds, Song Thrushes, Dunnocks, Wood Pigeons and Doves. There are various guards that can cover a ground feeder to prevent large birds from taking all the food as the smaller birds can get through the mesh very easily.

Hanging Feeders

Hanging Feeders

Hanging feeders provide an ideal way to feed a variety of birds with a range of bird food from mixed seed to niger seed and peanuts. Hanging feeders come in a wide variety of designs and types to suit various food types and different birds that feed. The materials may range from being made from wood and wire to plastic and galvanised metal or stainless steel. These days a number of trendy colours and designs have become available.

The better quality feeders will last longer, but will cost more. The Droll Yankee feeders are probably the best, but they are the most expensive. Also spare parts are readily available for the Droll Yankee feeders and extra add-ons are available which are available under accessories.

Window FeedersWindow Feeders

Window feeders are ideal for those who do not have a garden or for those who like to see birds feeding close at hand at their window. All of the designs require them to be stuck to your window with sucker pads. These require that the glass is cleaned with a glass window cleaner before hand. Generally, these types of feeders are fairly small and will only take small quantities of food. There are also, under accessories, window hooks that can stick to your window to allow you to hang an ordinary hanging feeder.
Feeder Hygiene

Feeder Hygiene

It is important to keep the feeders clean. Clean and wash hanging feeders regularly with a disinfectant. When cleaning the feeders use disposable gloves and wash your hands thoroughly afterwards. Avoid touching your mouth, eyes or nose whilst cleaning until after you have finished and washed your hands. For more information Click Here.
