In more recent years, fat balls and suet pellets have become a popular way of giving the garden birds an energy boost in the winter and spring breeding season. Fat balls are a mixture of suet and various seeds. The suet pellets are normally available in a number flavours and mixes - you just need to try some out to find out which ones the birds in your garden prefer.

It is now recommended that garden birds are fed wild bird food all year round as it provides them much needed food especially when natural food sources have declined with man's activities. Many bird species that we know well have been in decline and therefore feeding them all year round does encourage them when they might be struggling elsewhere. With the modern development of wild bird seed mixes, the range of bird food available does at least cater for a broader spectrum of bird species.
